Brushed Finish Types: Satin (No.4) and Hairline
A brushed finish is made by running abrasive belts along the sheet, leaving fine parallel lines instead of a mirror shine. We make it in two types: satin, the short-grain finish known as No.4 or #4, and hairline (HL), with long, continuous lines.
Satin
No.4 / #4Short, fine brush lines in one direction with a soft, low-reflective sheen. The most widely used brushed finish, and what most buyers mean when they say "brushed". A reliable choice for kitchens, appliances, elevator walls and wall panels.
Satin Stainless Steel Sheet →Hairline
HLLong, continuous lines that run the full length of the sheet, like fine strands of hair. A crisper, more linear look for elevator doors, feature walls, door frames and furniture trim. Available as straight and cross hairline.
Hairline Stainless Steel Sheet →Hairline Patterns
Straight Hairline (HL)
Long, straight lines in one direction, along the sheet length
Cross Hairline
Two sets of lines crossing for a woven look

How We Brush: Oil Brushing for a Finer Grain
Every brushed sheet starts from cold-rolled 2B stainless steel. Abrasive belts run along the length of the sheet and cut the fine lines that give the brushed look.
Brushing can be done dry or wet. We brush wet, with oil, on every sheet. The oil cools the surface and carries away grinding debris, so the grain comes out finer and more even than dry brushing. Oil brushing costs more, and it is the only way we brush.
Brushed sheets can also be PVD coated, Inco colored or given an antique finish, and finished with an anti-fingerprint layer.
Silver and Colored Brushed Stainless Steel
Colors are added on top of the brushed grain, so the lines stay visible through the color. The same color looks different on a brushed base than on a mirror base, so approve your sample on the finish you will actually order.

More Colors
Rose gold, champagne, brass, and other colors are also available on a brushed base.

What to Check Before You Order Brushed Sheets
A brushed finish is directional, so a few details decide whether the panels look right once they are on the wall.
Grain Direction
Brush lines run along the length of the sheet, and light catches them differently from each side. A panel turned 90° can read as a different shade next to its neighbor. Mark the grain direction on your drawings so every panel lines up.
Welds and Bends
Welding and grinding interrupt the grain. On silver sheets, weld seams can be ground and re-brushed to blend in. On PVD colored sheets, re-brushing removes the color, so plan joints away from visible faces or fold the edges instead.
Batch Consistency
The same grade from different mills can brush to a slightly different tone, and 304 and 430 do not look identical with the same satin finish. That is why we match your bulk order to the sample you approved.
Fingerprints and Cleaning
Brushed stainless hides fingerprints and light scratches far better than mirror, but high-touch surfaces such as elevator walls and appliance doors still benefit from an AFP coating. Clean along the grain with a soft cloth.

Brushed Stainless Steel Sheet FAQ
Answers to the questions buyers ask most about brushed stainless steel. If you can't find what you're looking for, just contact us.
Is brushed stainless steel the same as No.4?
No.4 (#4) is the most common brushed finish and the one most buyers mean by "brushed". We call it satin. Brushed also covers hairline (HL), which has longer, continuous lines.
Brushed vs satin finish: are they the same?
Satin is one type of brushed finish. At VIGORSS, satin means No.4: short, fine lines with a soft sheen. Hairline is the other brushed type we make.
What is the difference between No.4 satin and hairline?
The length of the lines. No.4 satin has short, fine lines and a soft, even sheen. Hairline has long, continuous lines that run the length of the sheet and give a crisper, more linear look.
What is cross hairline?
Cross hairline is a hairline pattern with two sets of lines crossing each other for a woven look. We also make straight hairline, with long lines in one direction along the sheet length.
Why do you use oil brushing?
Wet brushing with oil gives a finer, more even grain than dry brushing. It costs more, but it is how we brush every sheet.
Does brushed stainless steel show fingerprints and scratches?
Much less than mirror. For elevators, kitchens and other high-touch areas, add our anti-fingerprint (AFP) coating. Light scratches on silver sheets can be blended by brushing along the grain; on PVD colored sheets this removes the color.
Which way does the grain run?
Along the length of the sheet. On a 1219 × 2438 mm sheet, the lines run along the 2438 mm side. Mark the grain direction on your drawings so every panel is cut and installed the same way.
Which stainless steel grade should I choose?
304 suits most interior projects. 316 and 316L have higher corrosion resistance for coastal, outdoor or humid environments. 430 is a lower-cost option for interior use. 304 and 430 look slightly different with the same brushed finish, so choose the grade before you approve the sample.
Can brushed sheets be bent and welded?
Yes. Keep the protective film on while bending. Weld seams on silver sheets need grinding and re-brushing to match the grain. For PVD colored sheets, plan joints away from visible faces.
What is the MOQ and lead time?
Our MOQ is 10 sheets or 30 m². Popular items in stock ship within 5 working days. Production orders take 10–20 days, depending on the finish and quantity.
